The pulse conversion characteristics of an interferometric wavelength converter using XPM in SOA and the influence of the ASE on the conversion process are analyzed in the time domain. The variations of the output extinction ratio without and with ASE are obtained for different SOA lengths and probe‐power split ratios. From the extinction ratio variation for the input signal power level, the optimized operating condition for a small ASE noise effect is discussed. The influence of the ASE on the extinction ratio of the converted signal as a function of wavelength‐conversion bandwidth is also obtained. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
