A full‐vectorial finite‐element propagation method, spurious mode free, with off‐diagonal elements in the permittivity tensor is presented for the first time. Comparison with experimental data obtained from the alignment of the principal axes in birefringent fibers validates the method. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
