A novel millimeter‐wave short backfire antenna with a circular waveguide TM 01 mode feed is proposed and simulated using the FDTD method. It has a radiation pattern that is similar to that of a circular microstrip patch antenna operating in the TM 02 mode, but it has a much higher gain and lower sidelobe levels. The proposed antenna can be used for millimeter‐wave wireless LAN applications. ©2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 24: 348–349, 2000.
