This paper describes a very simple and stable harmonically mode‐locked erbium‐doped fiber ring laser that produces high‐peak‐power, 1 ps transform‐limited sech 2 optical pulses at 1564 nm at a repetition rate of 1 GHz. This very short pulse duration is attributed to the insertion of a comb generator in the modulation scheme. The temporal and spectral characteristics of the pulses are studied. Soliton transmission over 40 km of standard nondispersion‐shifted single‐mode fiber is demonstrated using this laser. ©2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 24: 285–287, 2000.
