In this paper, a shaped‐beam pattern is synthesized for a base station antenna in a mobile communication system by controlling only the excitation phases of the array elements. We first employ the weighting function to construct an objective function in a minimum mean‐square‐error sense, which will then be minimized by the quasi‐Newton method. Two synthesis examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and capability of this proposed method. ©2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 24: 226–228, 2000.
