The design of a novel X‐band reflective quasioptical amplifier microstrip patch array is presented. Polarization diversity was used to maintain input and output isolation below 35 dB. A comparative measurement of the passive and active structures was carried out to characterize the gain and other related parameters for the evaluation of the active array. An active array was developed at X‐band, with an effective power of 14 dBm and an EIRP of 29 dBm. ©2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 24: 93–99, 2000.
