A nickel‐indiffused LiNbO 3 directional coupler with a combinational waveguide structure was fabricated successfully by the proton‐exchanged wet‐etching technique for the first time. In addition, the coupling characteristics of the Ni:LiNbO 3 waveguide device, including the coupling coefficient and coupling length, were exactly measured at a wavelength of 1.3 μm. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
