Energy conversion from two pump waves into a middle‐frequency weak signal wave due to four‐wave mixing in low‐dispersion fibers is analyzed numerically and experimentally. Energy conversion of 20% is possible under realistic conditions, limited by fiber attenuation, high‐order dispersion, and pump depletion. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
