Recently, a pseudospectral time‐domain (PSTD) algorithm has been developed which needs two points per linear wavelength to achieve the same level of accuracy as the conventional FDTD method if the structure is fairly homogeneous. In contrast, for highly inhomogeneous media, the FDTD is still the method of choice. In this paper, we propose a combined PSTD and FDTD method which retains the merits of each individual method. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 23: 249–254, 1999.
