Photonic bandgap structures in microstrip technology have been recently proposed as efficient frequency‐band reflectors. To obtain high rejection values and sharp cutoffs, it is necessary to include a large number of periods in the structure. The novel configuration proposed in this letter makes this possible within a reasonable physical size. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 23: 233–236, 1999.
