The tangential component of the electric field e is not always continuous across a surface. In fact, it suffers a discontinuity equal to −grad s (τ/ε 0 ) across a nonuniform dipole layer of density τ. This paper shows how the distributional form of curl e automatically produces the sought discontinuity. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 23: 97–100, 1999.
