Using a linear periodic refractive index pattern on the macroscopic scale in a suitable material, a new type of ultraviolet filter is suggested. This structure is able to act as an efficient ultraviolet monochromator. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 23: 36–38, 1999.
