We propose a simple and fast fiber grating model for the analysis and synthesis of 1‐D photonic bandgap structures consisting of circles etched in the ground plane of microstrip lines. The relationship between the parameters of the photonic bandgap structure and those for an equivalent fiber Bragg grating having the frequency response of the first shifted to the optical wavelength range is described. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
