Mode charts have been extracted for dielectric resonators in cylindrical and rectangular cavities and conductor‐loaded planar cavities using the rectangular coordinate FDTD algorithm. A modal extraction procedure is applied to obtain the time‐domain samples, and the matrix‐pencil method is applied to these samples to obtain the resonant frequency values. The transverse symmetry planes of the modes have also been exploited in order to control the modes the resonator will support, as well as to reduce memory and computation requirements. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
