A comparative investigation is performed for examining the co‐ and cross‐polarized reflection and transmission characteristics of some bianisotropic slabs with or without a backed soft and hard surface (SHS), respectively. The bianisotropic models treated here possess certain magnetic groups of symmetries, such as D ∞ ( C ∞ ) and D ∞ h ( C ∞ν ). Numerical examples are presented to show the effects resulting from changing the magnetic groups as well as the conductivity direction on SHS on the co‐ and cross‐polarized reflection and transmission coefficients. Some generalized relations are found and discussed. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 21: 351–356, 1999.
