A new method for array pattern synthesis in the presence of near‐zone scatterers in the two‐dimensional scalar case is presented. The synthesis is based on the minimization of an objective function using the simulated annealing technique. To take into account the effects of the scatterers, the physical optics approximation is used. Examples for a 41‐element linear array in the presence of perfectly electric conducting cylinders are performed. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 21: 275–277, 1999.
