A nonuniform mesh FDTD algorithm having an accuracy of second order in time, fourth order in space has been derived. The order of accuracy is proven by comparing the resonant frequency results for a rectangular cavity with those obtained using a uniform mesh algorithm. The method's usefulness is confirmed by using it to obtain accurate results for slot coupling between hybrid‐mode dielectric resonators. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
