A new method for the analytical investigation of nonuniform gratings (NG) is presented. For this type of grating, the average permittivity, local period, and depth of modulation are arbitrary and slowly varied along the grating. The method enables one to obtain analytical formulas for the characteristics of arbitrary NG. A special case of linearly chirped grating (LCG) is investigated in detail, and closed‐form expressions for the reflective function in all frequency intervals are obtained for the first time. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
