WDM optical communication systems operating in the anomalous dispersion region are shown to exhibit enhanced spectral broadening due to power phase‐matched pumping of generated four‐wave mixing spectral sidebands. In this regime, strong signal power modulation along the fiber takes place. We also show that nonzero dispersion‐shifted fibers successfully overcome these problems. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
