The realization of a second‐order neural network using a lenslet array is proposed. A method of generalization of matrix from a vector is considered such that the second‐order neural network with a vector input can be considered as a first‐order neural network with two‐dimensional matrix input. Retrieval performances of both first‐order and second‐order neural networks as content‐addressable memories are verified with computer simulations. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
