In this letter, we present expression for the fundamental lower limit on the radiation quality factor Q of antennas or systems of antennas which have multiple input ports, in the case where the input ports are designed to be mutually isolated. It is shown that, as the number of input ports is increased, the quality factor increases sharply. For this reason, it is difficult to design such antenna systems to operate over a broad bandwidth within an electrically small volume. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
