This paper proposes two tripler circuits intended to work at high frequencies without the necessity of using filtering. The first circuit is based on the large signal transfer characteristic of a differential pair, while the second works on the large signal transfer characteristic of antiparallel diodes. Conditions for optimizing the tripler performance are obtained theoretically and experimentally. Practical implementations of these circuits at low frequencies were constructed. They exhibit a tripled output signal with low distortion caused by nonlinear components of different order from the third. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 19: 296–301, 1998.
