The radiation problem of the Smith–Purcell type is considered for the case where a line charge moves, at a constant speed, parallel to a periodic strip grating over a grounded dielectric slab. Numerical results pertaining to the radiation intensities and magnitudes of space harmonics for various cases of geometrical parameters and dielectric permittivities are presented, based upon which some discussions on the occurrence of the sharp maximum radiation intensity of the n =−1 space harmonic and the characteristic behavior of neighboring space harmonic magnitudes under such a condition of maximum radiation are given. The relationship between the k 0 d −β d diagram and the Smith–Purcell radiation are also briefly discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 19: 292–296, 1998.
