Using magnetic group theory, the degeneracy of the plane eigenwaves in bianisotropic media is studied. The relationships between different (anti)elements of symmetry and the four types of degeneracy and the three types of bidirectionality are defined. The results of the analysis are verified by direct solutions of the dispersive equations for several media. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 19: 238–242, 1998.
