Experimental studies of a 2×2 triangular microstrip subarray are presented. Measured results of the array's operating bandwidth and radiation characteristic are analyzed, and the results are also compared with those obtained from a rectangular microstrip subarray at the same operating frequency. Theoretical results of the radiation patterns of the microstrip subarrays are also computed to verify the measured data. Results indicate that, due to the smaller physical size of the triangular patch as compared to the rectangular one, the triangular microstrip array can have a relatively larger space for the coplanar feed‐network layout. However, the performance of the triangular microstrip array is also affected by its smaller element size. Details of experimental results are presented and discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
