Abstract Our paper describes radio‐wave propagation through a forest. The transmitter and receiver are situated in the forest medium. It was found that two mechanisms of propagation depend on the transmitter–receiver distance. At short distances, the direct wave dominates. The mechanism at large distances is similar to wave propagation along the earth surface. The estimation of the effective complex permittivity of a forest is obtained. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
