An investigation of the recently developed numerical technique based on both the finite‐element time‐domain (FETD) method and the finite‐difference time‐domain (FDTD) method is presented. This hybrid technique, exploiting the advantages of both methods, seems very promising. Validation through comparison with the 2‐D canonical problem, as well as an example of a configuration which cannot be easily treated with either of the two methods, are reported. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
