Based on the variational method, a simple single‐parameter approximation for the LP 01 mode field of graded‐index fibers has been proposed. Using this new approximation as well as the other single‐parameter approximations available in the literature, important propagation characteristics such as the propagation constant, splice loss, mode field radius, normalized dispersion, effective area, etc., have been computed, and a comparative study of the accuracies obtained by these approximations has been presented. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
