Axially located slots are introduced into wide strip lines in high‐power beamformers to suppress the excitation of higher order modes. A variational finite‐element technique is used to calculate the higher order model parameters and to evaluate the operation of the slot for a typical discontinuity. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
