We propose a new type of multimode waveguide (MMW) where the switching operation is controlled by decreasing the refractive indexes of certain regions of the waveguide. They are simpler in structure than those based on a phase shifter, and need fewer controllers in every switching operation—a feature very attractive for larger matrices. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
