The gain and noise characteristics of v ‐groove waveguide amplifiers with high Er concentration are predicted using finite‐element simulation. A four‐level model which includes the effects of up‐conversion and cross relaxation was used. The simulations predict that a net gain of 7.2 dB is possible with 100 mW of pump power in a 4 cm amplifier. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 16: 300–303, 1997.
