He–Ne laser lightwaves in an optical fiber are directly modulated by applying audio frequency‐modulating electric fields at the input end. Temporal drift of the detected output signal in the spectral domain and its dependency on detector location are presented. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 16: 296–300, 1997.
