A compact linear array microstrip antenna operating in the X‐band is described. This antenna, which has a two‐layer structure, is fed using a microstrip slot aperture, and consists of electromagnetically coupled resonators. The advantage of this design is a size reduction of the antenna, compared to conventional array antennas, without an alteration of the performances. Experimental results for the return loss and the radiation patterns of the antenna are presented, and we demonstrate the usefulness of the techniques for a monolithic realization, especially at millimeter wavelengths. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
