FSS consisting of arrays of single rings have been etched onto optically transparent, but microwave reflecting layers deposited on thin supporting substrates. The transmission performance is compared with that of arrays of metallic elements with the same dimensions. With the correct choice of materials, the relative passband losses were reduced to 1 dB. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 16: 61–63, 1997.
