The scattering problem for gratings at high frequencies is considered. The problem is formulated in a bounded domain through a pseudodifferential operator which is related to an on‐surface radiation condition. The total field, as well as the pseudodifferential operator, is expanded in series with respect to the frequency. Approximate solutions for high frequencies are obtained, and numerical results are presented. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 16: 124–128, 1997.
