A new interpretation of Berenger's perfectly matched layer (PML) equations is presented in this paper. This new formulation is based on field scaling rather than coordinate stretching, and is derived from an unsplit form of Berenger's PML equations. It is demonstrated how the field scaling approach may be used to develop a methodology for unifying the Berenger and the anisotropic PML formulations. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
