We propose and study an all‐optical switching device made of a bent nonlinear waveguide using the beam propagation method. All‐optical switching characteristics of the proposed device are based on the evolution of a nonlinear guided wave along a bent nonlinear waveguide. The numerical results show that the transmission curve has an almost ideal transmission between the “ON” and “OFF” states. The contrast ratio between the “ON” and “OFF” states is strongly dependent on the waveguide structure. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 16: 54–58, 1997.
