A numerical model of a distributed feedback laser (DFB) with carrier transport effects is developed. Carrier transport effects have been incorporated by solving drift‐diffusion equations. The large‐signal response has been analyzed. It was found that carriers in a barrier region play an important role in determining frequency chirp. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
