In this article we present a modified version of the time‐domain distorted Born iterative method (TDDBIM), based on the frequency‐compensating technique (FCT), for the reconstruction of lossy dielectric objects. The FCT is applied to improve the ill‐posed characteristics of the inverse problems and to speed up the convergence of the TDDBIM. Numerical results for the reconstruction of two‐dimensional lossy objects show that the algorithm is very effective in improving the rate of convergence of the TDDBIM. Furthermore, the modified algorithm performs well even in the presence of a 20‐dB signal‐to‐noise ratio and does not impose an additional burden on the CPU. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
