Transition losses occur between curved and straight rib waveguides. They have been reduced by offsetting the guides and placing a trench on the outside rib of the waveguide. We also can investigate more novel effects such as rib heights, side‐wall slopes, and trench slopes with the use of a 3D beam‐propagation program. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
