A linear, homogeneous medium, with ${\b D}({\b r})={\epsilon}{\kern‐0.6em \raise ‐1.2ex\hbox{=}} \cdot {\b E} ({\b r}) + ({\alpha}{\kern‐0.6em \raise ‐1.3ex\hbox{=}}+{\underline \sigma}\times {I}{\kern‐0.5em \raise ‐1ex\hbox{=}}) \cdot {\b H}({\b r})$ and ${\b B}({\b r})={\mu}{\kern‐0.6em \raise ‐1.2ex\hbox{=}} \cdot {\b H} ({\b r}) + ({\beta}{\kern‐0.6em \raise ‐1.2ex\hbox{=}}+{\underline \tau}\times {I}{\kern‐0.5em \raise ‐1ex\hbox{=}}) \cdot {\b E}({\b r})$ as its frequency‐dependent constitutive relations, can be mapped into another linear, homogeneous medium with ${\b D}\prime ({\b r})={\epsilon}{\kern‐0.6em \raise ‐1.2ex\hbox{=}} \cdot {\b E}\prime ({\b r}) + {\alpha}{\kern‐0.6em \raise ‐1.2ex\hbox{=}}\cdot {\b H}\prime ({\b r})$ and ${\b B}\prime ({\b r})={\mu}{\kern-0.6em \raise -1.2ex\hbox{=}} \cdot {\b H}\prime ({\b r}) + {\beta}{\kern-0.6em \raise -1.2ex\hbox{=}}\cdot {\b E}\prime ({\b r})$ as its constitutive relations, provided σ = − τ. This mapping extends the scope of many extant results on radiation and propagation in linear media. We also delineate the relationship of the condition σ = − τ to the Post constraint that must be satisfied by the constitutive relations of all physical materials. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
