The optical channel waveguide we study consists of a Ti‐diffused LiNbO 3 optical waveguide with a Langmuir‐Blodgett (LB) film deposited on the surface. The transmission‐line theory and effective index method are applied to the analysis of the waveguide transmission to obtain its characteristic equations. The calculation results show that refractive index changes of the LB film can cause a change of the propagation constants of a guided mode, which can be used in a gas‐sensing device. Experimental work has been done, and its results are given to examine the sensing properties of the LB‐film‐covered waveguide. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
