The effective tensors of permittivity and permeability for multilayer anisotropic media are obtained. All expressions are written in a direct coordinate‐free manner. The theory is illustrated by examples with particular systems of layers. Complete agreement with formulas obtained by other methods is shown. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
