We analyze symmetric and parallel nonlinear directional couplers with the finite‐difference beam‐propagation method. The results exhibit a cutoff phenomenon of an antisymmetric mode. We also investigate tapered nonlinear couplers for their possible applications to all‐optical logic gates. The numerical results show that tapered nonlinear couplers can provide an XOR (eXclusive OR) logic function. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 15: 43–46, 1997.
