Harmonic distortion in directly modulated laser diodes is predicted with the use of a harmonic balance technique. Results are presented up to the third order and are compared with those obtained through the perturbation method. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 14: 327–330, 1997.
