We propose and develop an exact and efficient approach to analyze the effect of discontinuities on guided waves for open planar chirowaveguides. We use a technique that combines a one‐dimensional finite‐element method for the eigenvalue problem in the transverse direction with a rigorous mode‐matching procedure for the discontinuities in the longitudinal direction. Both the scattering of discrete spectra surface‐wave modes and the continuous spectra radiation and evanescent modes are discussed in this article. Equivalent transmission‐line networks are introduced in the longitudinal direction so that multimode network theory can be used to simplify the analysis. Features such as symmetrical properties of the structure are also discussed. Based on the analysis, we investigate mode conversion and radiation characteristics and propose a mode converter whose converted power is over 90% for moderate values of the chirality parameter. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
