The task of maximizing channel capacity and covered distance for optical analog TV systems while maintaining a desired CNR (carrier‐to‐noise ratio) is discussed. The focused system works with a subcarrier located in the 2‐GHz range and uses the AM‐VSB format. It is shown that satisfactory results may be obtained economically with the use of commercially available devices. Examples are given for several distances and capacities. When all system impairments, such as laser chirp, splice reflections, nonlinear distortions, and shot and intensity noise, are considered, channel capacities ranging from 40 to 120, covering distances from 37 to 20 km, respectively, may be obtained, yielding a CNR of 52 dB. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
