According to the core‐cladding interface of an ideal waveguide, a step‐index fiber, the transverse plane has been divided into two regions. Mode fields and propagation constants of the graded‐index optical fibers have been calculated by the use of partial‐waveguide‐mode expansion and coupled‐mode theory. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
