A theoretical characterization of a novel microwave semiconductor oscillator is presented. Its electromagnetic system is a three‐mirror open resonator (OR) formed by the two metal mirrors placed on the side facets of a dielectric prism, and the total‐internal‐reflection (TIR) facet of the latter. The semiconductor is placed near the TIR facet. We examine a class of magnetoplasma surface waves. It is shown that in such a system, when the coupling coefficient of OR with semiconductor decreases, transformation into a multistable state is observed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
