This article describes external microstrip‐microslot applicators with several patches radiating through one or several apertures that have been developed for microwave hyperthermia controlled by microwave radiometry. The possibility of obtaining larger hearing patterns than with the single microstrip‐microslot applicators (one patch radiating through one aperture) is clearly focused by the theoretical results that are presented and verified by experimental measurements. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.Microwave Opt Technol Lett 14, 121–126, 1997
